What Is a Medical Pedicure?
A medical pedicure is a therapeutic foot care treatment designed to be safe for everyone — including patients with diabetes, arthritis, fungal infections, ingrown toenails, warts, and other chronic foot conditions.
All instruments used in our medical pedicures are sterilized through a rigorous three-step process: soaking in germicidal solution, cleaning in an ultrasonic cleaner, and autoclaving. The chair is sanitized between clients, and the tub is pipeless and filterless — every client receives their own disposable liner that is discarded after use.

What makes a medical pedicure different from a regular pedicure?
A medical pedicure is performed under the oversight of a licensed podiatrist using sterilized, autoclaved instruments. All equipment is sanitized between clients and the tub uses individual disposable liners. This level of hygiene and clinical oversight cannot be matched at a conventional nail salon, making medical pedicures safe for patients with health conditions like diabetes or compromised immunity.
Is a medical pedicure safe if I have diabetes?
Yes — in fact, medical pedicures are often recommended for diabetic patients. Because diabetes increases the risk of infection from even minor foot injuries, having your nails and skin cared for in a medically supervised setting with properly sterilized instruments is far safer than a standard nail salon visit.
How long does a medical pedicure take?
All medical pedicures at New Canaan Podiatry are at least one hour long. The Deluxe package is approximately 1.5 hours. If you are planning add-ons such as paraffin boots or extended massage, please request these at the time of booking.
Do I need to be a patient of Dr. Tauber to get a medical pedicure?
No. Medical pedicures are available to anyone. However, because they are performed in a podiatric setting, any foot concerns noticed during your pedicure can be easily addressed by Dr. Tauber.
What nail polish is used for medical pedicures?
We use Dr. Remedy nail polish, a specially formulated nail care line developed by podiatrists that is free from many of the harsh chemicals found in conventional polishes. It is antifungal and promotes nail health.
Can I add services to my medical pedicure?
Yes. A range of add-ons are available, including a French pedicure, callus remover, shine and buff, paraffin boots with massage, and extended massage sessions. Please request your desired add-ons when scheduling your appointment.
How often should I get a medical pedicure?
This depends on your individual foot care needs. Many patients schedule medical pedicures every 4–8 weeks. Diabetic patients or those with nail conditions may benefit from more frequent visits. Dr. Tauber can advise you on an appropriate schedule based on your foot health.
