EPAT Shockwave Therapy in New Canaan, CT

What Is EPAT Shockwave Therapy?

EPAT (Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology) is an FDA-cleared shockwave therapy that uses acoustic pressure waves to trigger your body’s own healing response in damaged soft tissue, most commonly for plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, and heel spurs. At New Canaan Podiatry, Dr. Jennifer Tauber, DPM, offers EPAT as a non-surgical option for chronic pain that hasn’t responded to rest, stretching, or anti-inflammatory medication.

How EPAT Works

EPAT delivers acoustic pressure waves through a handheld applicator directly into the injured tissue. Those waves create controlled microtrauma at the cellular level, a form of targeted, low-grade stress that prompts the body to ramp up its own repair process. In practice, that means increased blood flow to the area, faster metabolic activity, and stimulation of the cellular repair mechanisms that chronic injuries often need a push to restart. For conditions where scar tissue or calcium deposits have built up, EPAT can also help break down that abnormal tissue so the area can heal more normally.

Conditions EPAT Treats

EPAT is well suited to soft tissue and bone-related conditions that haven’t fully responded to conservative care, including:

1

Plantar fasciitis and chronic heel pain

2

Achilles tendonitis and tendon insertional pain

3

Heel spurs

4

Bursitis

5

Calcific tendinopathy, including pump bump and Haglund's deformity

6

Chronic muscle pain and myofascial trigger points

7

Other soft tissue injuries that have stalled under rest and physical therapy alone

What to Expect From Treatment

A session starts with ultrasound gel applied to the treatment area to help the acoustic waves transmit properly, then Dr. Tauber or a trained clinician passes the handheld applicator over the affected tissue. Sessions are quick, performed right in the office, and most patients tolerate them well, some mild discomfort during treatment is normal given the nature of the therapy, but it’s brief and manageable. There’s no incision, no anesthesia required for most patients, and no real recovery time, you can go back to your normal day immediately after.

Clinical research on EPAT has shown strong outcomes for chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis, with published studies reporting a large majority of patients experiencing significant pain reduction or becoming pain-free after a full course of treatment.
