Spider Vein Treatment in New Canaan, CT

What Are Spider Veins, and When Do They Need Treatment?

Spider veins are those small, weblike red, blue, or purple vessels that show up near the skin’s surface, most often on the legs. They’re usually cosmetic, but for some patients they come with real symptoms, aching, burning, or a heavy feeling in the legs. Dr. Jennifer Tauber, DPM, evaluates spider veins at New Canaan Podiatry and offers Fotona laser treatment for patients who want them addressed.

Why They Show Up, Especially in the Legs

Spider veins form when the walls of small vessels near the skin weaken and start to fail. Blood pools inside those weakened vessels instead of circulating normally, which is what produces the visible thread-like lines. The legs bear the brunt of this because your circulatory system is constantly working against gravity to push blood back up from your lower body to your heart, so any weakness in that system tends to show up there first.

A number of things raise your risk:

  • Hormonal shifts, particularly during pregnancy, puberty, or menopause
  • Long stretches of standing or sitting, which raises venous pressure in the legs
  • A family history of spider or varicose veins
  • Extended sun exposure, especially on the face and legs
  • Natural weakening of vessel walls with age
  • Prior injury or trauma to the area
  • Extra weight, which adds pressure on leg veins

Symptoms Beyond the Visible Veins

A lot of patients come in purely for cosmetic reasons, but when a larger number of veins are involved, physical symptoms often come with them:

  • Aching, burning, or throbbing in the legs
  • Pain or tenderness right over the affected veins
  • A heavy, tired feeling in the legs after standing
  • Itching or irritation around the veins
  • Numbness in isolated spots

If you’re noticing any of these alongside visible veins, it’s worth getting evaluated, both for relief and to rule out a more significant underlying venous issue.

How We Approach Treatment

For mild cases without real symptoms, conservative measures like compression stockings and regularly elevating your legs can go a long way. When spider veins are more persistent or symptomatic, Dr. Tauber turns to laser treatment using the Fotona platform, which seals off the affected vessels so your body can gradually absorb them. It’s comfortable, fully non-invasive, and doesn’t require any downtime, a lot of patients fit sessions into a lunch break. For a full walkthrough of what a laser session involves, session length, how many you’ll likely need, and what recovery looks like, see our dedicated Laser Vein Removal page. Dr. Tauber will help you figure out whether laser treatment, conservative management, or a combination makes the most sense for your specific veins.
