What causes warts?

Foot warts develop when human papillomavirus (HPV) enters a cut, abrasion, or wound in your skin. When HPV gets into your skin, you can develop a single wart or a cluster of warts. But not everyone who comes into contact with this viral invader develops warts. Your risk of warts increases due to:

  • Weakened immune system
  • Having a history of foot warts
  • Being younger (warts are common among teens and children)

You can even come into contact with wart-causing HPV simply by walking barefoot in a contaminated area where viruses thrive, like a sauna or gym shower. Wart viruses aren’t highly contagious, but it’s certainly possible to develop warts because you shared socks or shoes with someone else who has an infection.

Do warts cause symptoms?

Yes. Initially, you may notice small, fleshy growths popping up on the bottom of your foot, typically around your toes. These unsightly growths tend to have black pinpoint centers, which indicate broken blood vessels inside — a common trait of warts. As your warts progress, you may experience:

  • Pain
  • Burning
  • Stabbing
  • Numbness

Plus, the more you walk on warts, the more likely they are to start growing inward. This can lead to the formation of calluses over them, which can worsen your symptoms. If any of these issues seem familiar, book an evaluation at New Canaan Podiatry right away.
